2010 Parting Shot

Hi everyone:

I hope everyone had a good holiday. I had a nice, quiet one over here - Thai food for Christmas dinner (decided to change it up from the Jewish tradition of Chinese), ice sculptures at the National Harbor in MD and some good family time.

I have the house to myself for a couple of hours, so I'm chowing on coconut shrimp while the Afghan Whigs blare through my tiny laptop speakers. For my money, this isn't a bad way to spend an evening.

So, I promised everyone a new image before the end of the year. Here it is:

I've been toying with whether or not the image would make sense on the website. What do you guys think? Let me know. If you don't, you leave me to my own devices - and everyone knows how dangerous that can be!

Also, don't forget to visit Bell Studio on Southport to catch some of my work before it comes down! It's right by the Southport "L" - so snow or cold is no excuse. You're Chicagoans, right? No room for wussies in Chi-town - so get out there!

Happy Early New Year everyone! Lots more to come in 2011!

New and News

Happy Holidays y'all:

Like my southern twang? I know it doesn't really fit my personality - but ya gotta try somethin' new every once in a while. Blogging music today is Hurricane Bells - a great little band from NYC. It's a new project by the singer of Longwave - one of my favs. Cool stuff...check 'em out (they are streaming both their album and their EP on their website).

So, just got a couple rolls of film back. And.....they're shit. Pretty much complete shit - maybe one or two images are salvageable, but that's about it. That's 3 rolls of film in a row that have basically sucked. Not good - hopefully this will all be left behind in 2010 and 2011 will start out with some great stuff. We'll see - I've got one or two images I shot a couple of months ago that I'm still working on - so I'll try to get those up to the site - or at least here - before the end of the year.

The latest news is that one of my old haunts - Bell Studio in Chicago - has 4 of my pieces up. You Chicagoans out there, get over to the gallery to check them out! They're only up through the end of the year, so get there while the gettin's good! (maybe for a Christmas present for your favorite people on earth?)

Info is:

Bell Studio
3428 N. Southport (at the Brown Line Southport "L" Stop)
Chicago, IL 60657

Stay warm everyone, and enjoy the holidays. 2011's gonna be a great year - I can feel it.

Showing and Shooting

Hi all:

Well, it has been a while and I thought a blog entry on the eve of Thanksgiving was in order. I've got a lot to be thankful for this year - a great family, a fun vacation (which I just got back from), and a bunch of art news.

Blogging music today is The Ramones. Sometimes, you just gotta do it - know what I'm sayin'? Well, let's get right to it - the show at Zolla/Lieberman several weeks back was well-attended from what I understand. I was a bit bummed that they only hung 3 of the 4 pieces I sent them - especially because when Paul (my framer) was framing them, there was interest in one of the pieces. Of course, that's the one that wasn't hung in the show - even though it was initially accepted. Oh well - this kind of stuff happens sometimes...especially when the gallery only has one night to hang an entire show.

However, once that show came down, the pieces moved back to Bell Studio on Southport. I love those guys - and it's always good to show over there. So, drop by and take a peek if you wanna see some new work! Not sure how long they will be up - so get down there and check it out! Info is:

Bell Studio
3428 North Southport Avenue
Chicago, IL 60657-1420
(773) 281-2172

Other than that, I'm busy trying to find a new "home" for my work and am seeking out some publishing opportunities as well. My current body of work now has 10 finished pieces in it, which is enough to begin full-on promotion. For those of you who haven't been on the site in a while, check it out - there's some good new work up there. I've also been doing a ton of shooting - so hopefully I'll have some other new pieces in the not too distant future.

Enjoy your Thanksgiving holiday everyone. More after Turkey Day!

Busy Busy Bee

Happy rainy evening everyone:

Life could be worse - got out of work at a decent hour, sitting in a coffee shop, and giving you guys an update on things - all while listening to R.E.M.'s performance from their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. The version they did of "Gardening At Night" is enough of a reason to listen - trust me.

So, bottom line - I've been busy creating a lot of new work. most of which has been posted to my website - www.sirinsky.com (for those of you who still don't have it bookmarked, what are you waiting for?) But, I thought I'd post a few examples here, and tell you a little about each one - something I don't typically do on my website).

Shot this one at Fells Point in Baltimore, MD. Turned out as well as I could have possibly hoped. Straight from the camera...one of my favorite "straight" images that I've shot in years.

Can't remember specifically where I shot this one...but definitely on one of my many short driving excursions over the past several months. Turned out pretty decent I think...should fit in nicely with the new body of work.

And now, the star of the show (at least in my view). I'm pretty pleased with this one - the colors are much more punchy online - it's a little more neutral in person, but I'm really enjoying this image. It was created from a straight b/w - not a duotone, and the effect worked quite nicely in this case if I do say so myself. I shot this in South Carolina a month or so ago - and it's now the new image on my home page.

I have a few more I'm working on as well. This was also the first time I tried this photo lab out by me. And I have to say that, overall, this was the best batch of scans I've gotten back from a lab since I started this body of work over 8 years ago. I think it was a particularly good roll, which helped - but they did a great job. I definitely see myself becoming a repeat customer.

So, what do y'all think? Feedback and suggestions are always welcome of course...

More new images on the way. In the meantime, stay tuned, stay cool and stay safe.

Word.

Everything Deserves A Home

Hi everyone:

So, in my last post, I mentioned that some prints were drying. Well, that was in May. Obviously they've been dry for quite some time. So, why the two month delay in showing the result? Well, the main reason was that I decided to go with the "straight" version of the image rather than the rice paper print version. I just found the image to be stronger in it's root form...as did the other select few whose opinion I solicited. So, that's how it stayed:

But, for you loyal blog followers out there - I'm posting the rice paper print version that "didn't make the cut." It still has a nice quality to it...so I wanted to show y'all for comparison purposes:

In other news, I have finally found a pseudo-home for some of the non-plastic camera imagery I've been shooting. I've been struggling with the same issue for quite a while - how do you showcase strong imagery that falls outside the body of work you are trying to develop? At some point, if I end up with enough of it, I'll create a second portfolio on my website. But, for now, I've been posting those images to an account on JPG magazine. I've actually submitted some images for a couple of concepts for the magazine. But, really, it's mainly a dumping ground for new images I kinda dig that haven't found a "home" yet. Check 'em out and vote if you feel like it:

http://jpgmag.com/people/msirinsky

I've also been doing a lot of shooting - got back some film last week actually, so now it's time to edit. From there, I'll be getting some scans and will begin working on a bunch of new pieces hopefully!

That's the skinny everyone. Stay cool and more news soon.

Show and Tell

Happy Sunday Everyone!

For some reason, I keep coming back to this coffee shop that has sub par food and mediocre drinks. And now, I can add over-crowded to the list of negatives... not sure what keeps drawing me back to this place. The atmosphere is kinda cool - and it's one of the only local places that has free wi-fi, is close by, and isn't some major corporate giant. Maybe that's good enough - I dunno. But today I was a little smarter about my refreshment choices - cereal before leaving the house and a tasty iced tea at the shop - seems like a good solution.

Music today is a new I-Pod play list...pretty wide range, which matches my busy day of art, work at the office and dinner with friends. Song of the moment - "Running Out Of Time" by Sugar.

On the art side - I finally got Adobe Creative Suite on my Mac laptop (been a problem since the great "dropping incident.") And, as a result, I've got a couple of new pieces to show y'all. Well, they aren't quite done yet - but the files are pretty close to be being complete. I will likely run these through my standard printing process, but I reserve the right to go back to the original files and just use them as is. Aside from some color and minor tweaks, this is pretty much how they came out of the camera:

These are just two of many I've been working on - should have at least 2 others from this group as well...but gotta leave something to keep y'all wanting more - right?

I'm going back and forth on whether or not to post the image I showed in my last entry to the website. I could use everyone's thoughts - let me know what you think. Originally, I looked at it as more of a snapshot, and outside my current body of work - but the more I look at it, the more I like it quite honestly, and I'm thinking it could look OK. Thoughts?

Enjoy the rest of your weekend everyone. More to come soon.

Something New, Something Borrowed

Hi all:

I want to start out by professing my undying love for Wegmans. Seriously, I could live here. Great food, friendly folks, free wi-fi, and of course, great grocery shopping. The one I'm at even has a raw baw and free family movie nights on Mondays. What else do you need? I know - all that's lacking is good beer and wine, right? Well, they have that too!

Blogging music today is The Maccabees - a band out of the UK that I've actually liked for many years - but never picked-up one of their albums (they have 2). I actually discovered them when I saw them open for Bloc Party a few years ago in Philadelphia. Good stuff.

Well, let's get right to the chase - I've got a new image to show y'all. When I was deciding which new digital camera to pick up, I played with my father-in-law's pocket Lumix point-and-shoot. And though I didn't end up buying the same camera, it's a very snappy little camera. I shot this out the back door of my in-law's kitchen. The shot shows the neighboring house...and I'm kinda likin' it.

A little bit like some of my earlier work I think. If anyone is actually still reading this after my lengthy furlough, let me know what you think.

Still need to work on more image files - I hope to get to some of that this week. Definitely gettin' a little stir-crazy...the time has come to push a few more final images to the website. Gotta get some new work posted before I start shopping around again.

In closing, I ran across a new photographer named Alan Lambe. He does some interesting low-fi work with plastic and basic cameras...the site is in flash, so I can't post an example, but you can check out his site here:

Happy end to everyone's weekend! More soon!

Well, It's Something

I want to start off by asking how hard it can possibly be to make a decent scone? I mean, I'm not a baker (more of a cook actually - baking is too unforgiving for my taste), but every coffee shop and bakery on earth seems to know how to make a scone...except for the place in which I'm currently sitting. I'm not sure if they make them here or bring them in - but regardless, something needs to change. Yuck. Oh, and the smoke detector just started going off - because they toasted a bagel. In Leesburg, VA - we have slim pickin's.

Ok, now that we have that out of the way, a little update for everyone. No new work yet - which is partly because my wife dropped our laptop and destroyed the hard drive - which means I ended up losing my copy of Photoshop for Mac. I have a PC version on my desktop at home, but I find it pretty difficult to do work in my office of that nature right now - hopefully that will become less of an issue as my office gets in better shape. But, it's been on my mind.

One thing I did manage to do is purchase my first piece of major photo equipment (besides pocket point-and-shoot cameras) since high school. Yes, you heard right - since high school. One might ask how that is possible for a "professional" photographer - and honestly, the answer makes sense when you think about it. When I graduated high school, I got a Nikon FM2 - which I still have and will never get rid of. I shot with that camera all through art school, "borrowing" medium and large format cameras from the school studio on an as-needed basis. I continued to use that camera once I got out of art school for a little while, until I began using pinhole and plastic cameras to create my work - and those are what I continue to use to this day. Though I would have loved a Hassleblad, 4x5 camera, etc - but I just couldn't justify the cost since they weren't necessary for my work - and in fact were not even appropriate for it. I didn't want to spend the money on a DSLR - I just wanted a decent point and shoot digital that I could throw into the diaper bag when needed. But, my 5 MP Casio that is now several years old has been dropped multiple times (sensing a trend here?) and is no longer cutting it, so it was time to step it up a little.

I still decided I didn't need a DSLR - but I wanted some more control so I could be "full-on" digital. So, I settled on the Compact Lumix LX3 - which arrived last week. When I worked on Ara's shoot, the digital tech's and assistants all had the predecessor to this camera, and when I looked at it, I was immediately sold - and knew I had to have one....partly because of all the features and partly because it just looked so damn cool! Of course, it took me 6 months to actually spend the money, but you gotta remember that I've been using $20.00 technology for years now. Spending real $ on cameras is not something I've done for a very long time.

When I was at Ara's shoot, I didn't have much time to examine the camera - I was a little busy during those two days. And when I finally decided on it while in Chicago a couple of weeks ago, only one store in the entire area had it in stock for me to test out - and they only had it in silver, not the super-cool black that I wanted. I went back to my in-laws, bought it online from a NYC store and it arrived last week. It looks like this:

I think it's gonna be fun to learn. Work has been sapping every bit of energy (creative and otherwise) out of me, but I have the battery charging now and plan to test it out at my daughter's birthday party this afternoon. Yesterday was also my wife's birthday, so - Happy Birthday to my Princess and to the Queen of Our Castle.

I'll probably also do some playing around with it in a fine art sense - and I'll post some snaps when I can.

So, no work yet, but the tools are being put in place. Stay tuned for results...!

Resurrecting The Demons - Kinda...

Forgive me everyone, for I have sinned - it has been almost 3 months since my last blog entry...and I fear that the few fans I've managed to grab are now convinced this blog is dead - a lost cause of sorts. I've been thinking about y'all - I promise, but my life of late has not been my own. 3 moves since August, nights and weekends at the office, and two kids under the age of 5 - the list goes on and on. Not excuses, just explanations.

Art has been on my mind a lot. I have images sitting just waiting to be worked on, and an office that needs just a few solid hours of love before it is fully operational. I've been surrounding myself with artistic moments every chance I get - from popping into a gallery to going to seminars - the latest being the open curating at the White House Press Photographers Association's Annual Photo Review at the National Geographic Society. I've felt the creative energy being sucked from me a lot lately, and every day I try to think of ways to pull some of it back. Generally, my workload deems these attempts unsuccessful - but occasionally, a glimmer comes through that keeps me going. In tough times, those glimmers become increasingly important.

I've begun reaching out to galleries again as well - just a little, but I felt like I needed to do something to get me back into the swing of things again. Somehow, pitching my work creates some sense of normalcy - even though I promised myself I'd develop my latest body of work a little more first. Triage at the moment...but I am making the declaration here and now that I plan to begin writing a blog entry again once a week. I can't guarantee that every single one will be a revelation, but even a few lines is good for me, and lets you guys know that I still have my "eye on the prize."

Life has been changing a lot lately, and despite my track record over the last 5 years, I'm actually not a big fan of change. Little changes, yes. Dramatic life changes? No so much. But, going through so many at once makes it familiar territory.

Next blog will be a little more what y'all are used to from me. For now: I'm still in it to win it, and I'm back.

More soon,

-Marc
